Advocacy

USI advocates for formerly and currently incarcerated people by promoting policies that create opportunity for them to access higher education as a mechanism to be eligible for release and reducing likelihood of returning to prison. Due to our Ban the Box campaign efforts, UC Berkeley job applicants who have prior conviction histories will now find it easier to be considered on the merits of their knowledge and experience, under a policy that went into effect May 1, 2016. We are also vigorously working to develop higher education access opportunities for currently incarcerated people by making financial aid and Pell Grants available to all incarcerated people.
