In large part, marginalized people must demand the respect to create and amplify language that they consider more humanizing than the negative narratives imposed on us by dominant society. The late Eddie Ellis, a wrongfully convicted member of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, established the first academic think tank run by formerly incarcerated people: Center for NuLeadership. Paroling in 1994 with multiple degrees, Ellis worked to advance the dialogue around those who have been system impacted. Twenty five years later and our collective struggle to be recognized for the fullness of who we are as people remains. Language is not merely descriptive, it is creative. For too long we have borne the burden of having to recreate our humanity in the eyes of those who would have us permanently defined by a system that grew directly out of the the institution of American slavery, an institution that depended on the dehumanization of the people it enslaved. It is in this spirit that we, the formerly incarcerated and system-impacted academics who identify as the Underground Scholars Initiative (USI) at the University of California, Berkeley, call on the media, students, and public to utilize the following terminology when discussing our population individually or collectively. This is not about euphemisms or glossing over people's actions rather it is about reclaiming our identity as people first. It is important to note that this style guide is equally applicable when talking about similarly situated populations outside the United States. of the University of California, Berkeley. Shani earned her bachelor’s degree in African-American Studies and a minor in education in 2022. Shani is the director and founder of Incarceration to College and Pathways to College. She uses Black Feminist Pedagogies to increase the educational aspirations of in-custody and marginalized youth. In addition, Shani uses her program to provide UC Berkeley students with hands-on fieldwork experience. Shani served as the Advocacy co-chair for The Berkeley Underground scholars from 2019-2022 at UC Berkeley and now serves on the board of The Underground Scholars Initiative. Shani’s forwards educational access and systemic change by serving as the Chair of the Alameda County Education subcommittee. Shani is a 2021 Elder Freeman policy fellow; her advocacy work at the state capitol has helped to pass bills such as ACA3, which pushes to amend the constitution to stop indentured servitude. Shani also serves as the President of the Black Underground Scholars to recruit, retain, and advocate for black previously incarcerated students in the UC system. Shani is a 2021 Firebaugh Scholar; her research focuses on effective teaching methods for incarcerated and marginalized youth. Shani received the 2020 California Women in Leadership Award, the 2022 Mather Good Citizen Award, and several honors from the office of Nancy Skinner. She is a first-generation Latina student, the first in her immediate family to graduate from university. She received an A.A. in Liberal Arts at De Anza Community College. In 2022, Michelle earned her B.A. in Spanish and Portuguese with an emphasis in Spanish literature and culture from UC Berkeley. Along with her major, Michelle also completed an Education minor.
